  1. 1822-1895. French chemist and microbiologist
  2. who discovered that fermentation is caused by
  3. microorganisms. He also developed a vaccine
  4. for rabies, which led to the foundation of
  5. the Institut Pasteur in Paris 1888. Pasteur
  6. saved the French silkworm industry by
  7. identifying two microbial diseases that were
  8. decimating the worms. He discovered the
  9. pathogens responsible for anthrax and chicken
  10. cholera, and developed vaccines for these
  11. diseases. He inspired his pupil Lister's work
  12. in antiseptic surgery. Pasteurization to make
  13. dairy products free from the tuberculosis
